Furniture Find! Repainting an old entryway piece!

//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js I love finding a bargain! Whenever there are estate sales in the area, I love looking for old furniture to spruce up.  I found this entryway piece at a local estate sale for $90.  It was an ugly hunter green color and was in desperate need of some TLC.  So, to Home Depot I went in search of some heavy duty paint+primer to cover this piece.  I used valspar paint+primer in a satin finish and it covered the old glossy paint perfectly!

How To: Handprint pillow ornament!

//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js

The other day, my friend and I had a playdate with our little ones and we attempted to make salt dough handprint ornaments and it didnt turn out so well..

Mine ended up as an ornament poof!  Which, in a way, inspired my next idea for a handprint ornament!  I have found that paint handprints last so much longer and is a little bit easier (if you can prevent your child from getting paint everywhere! I highly recommend a helper!).  Here is what you will need:

1/4 yards of sturdy fabric (I used some canvas that I had in my craft closet)
Ribbon or jute rope
Pillow stuffing – I didn’t have any pillow stuffing so I just used cotton balls 🙂
Needle & thread (you can either hand sew the pillow or use a sewing machine)
Paint

My curious little one 🙂
NOTE: this is where the helper comes in handy! I did this project by myself and we ended up with red paint on the table, chairs and on our clothes! Luckily, it wiped off easy 🙂
After your handprints dry (I gave mine at least 12 hours), take your measuring tape and give about 1 cm border on the widest part of the handprint.  Mine ended up being about a 12 cm x 12 cm square but this will vary depending on how big your child’s handprint is.

Cut out the handprint and another square of fabric for the back side of the pillow.
Place the handprint fabric on top of the blank fabric and sew up three sides leaving one side open for you to put in the pillow stuffing (or in my case, cotton balls!)
Tie your ribbon or jute rope and cut each end.
Stuff the ornament with pillow stuffing or cotton balls.  I used about 12 cotton balls per pillow but you can use more or less depending on how “fluffy” you want your pillow!
Place the ribbon or jute rope inside the pillow and sew the remaining side of the pillow together.  NOTE: after I did this pillow, I realized how difficult it was to sew the jute rope while the stuffing was in there.  So, I sewed the top side of the pillow with the jute rope first, before the other sides and it was much easier 🙂

Viola! Finished product! These make great presents for family members and are very simple and easy to make!

Kylar’s Pink Lemonade Themed First Birthday Party!

Kylar had such a wonderful first birthday party and we are so thankful for all of our friends and family who came to celebrate it with us!  She had so much fun playing with her friends, opening her presents and eating her birthday cake!  I still can’t believe my sweet baby girl is one but I am loving watching her learn and grow.  She never ceases to amaze me with all of the new things she learns!  After much planning and preparation, here are some of the highlights of her birthday party!

For this sign, I hot glued the letters onto paper doilies and fed yellow yarn through the holes of the doilies.

 Kylar practicing her lemonade sales skills! 🙂

Check out Printable Candee Designs here on Etsy for the Pink Lemonade Party Pack that includes all of the designs I used for her decorations! It was so easy! She designed all of the water bottle labels, cupcake tags, food labels and more for only $30! Definitely worth it!

Letters to our sweet baby girl on her first birthday

Kylar Grace,

The day I found out I was pregnant with you, I was filled with a flood of mixed emotions. I was shocked, excited, scared, nervous and thankful all at the same time. Looking back on that day, I laugh because I had no idea how much brighter my life would be with you in it. Being your mommy has been more than I could have ever imagined. Your infectous smile, sweet cuddles, mischievous grin, little laugh and big personality have changed my life forever. Over the last year, i have watched you grow from a 6 pound 7 ounce precious newborn, to a thriving sweet one year old baby girl. You never cease to amaze me in all that you learn and pick up on. You seem to learn multiple new things each day and my newfound joy is watching you display your new insights, providing entertainment for me and daddy without fail! I’ve been told that there is no greater love than the love you have for your child and now that I have you as my beautiful daughter, I must say that statement perfectly depicts my feelings toward you. I so thankful that I have you as my little blessing to cherish. I know that in the future, things may not always be easy but I promise to never give up on you, to always have faith in you, to teach you the ways of God’s word, to instill in you morals and values, to provide for you to the best of my ability, to teach you responsibility, to always listen to you and offer you advice when times get confusing, to pray continuously over you and to love you unconditionally. Happy birthday sweet baby girl, I can’t wait to see what your bright future holds.

Love,
Mommy

Dear Kylar,

I cannot tell you how proud and lucky I am to be your father. Every day when you wake up and crack your beautiful smile at me makes my day. Today is a very special day in both of our lives, it is your first birthday and although you won’t remember this day, it will always be a special moment in my life. This first year of your life has been very fun for mommy and me. You have brought such joy and life into this great family. You will always be the greatest thing that has happened to me. I do not know what age you will be when you read this, but I promise to raise you with faith and love. I love you do much that words cannot describe it. Thank you for being my daughter.

Love,
Dad

P.S. A father’s love will never disappear

DIY: Vintage Paper Birthday Party Hat

//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js For my daughter’s first birthday party, I wanted to have cute little party hats for the little ones to wear.  Except I was sad to find that there were no cute party hats that were similar to her party theme.  So, I decided I would figure out a way to make my own!  Here is what I came up with.

They really dont take long once you figure out how to make them! Here are the supplies you will need:

– cardboard party hats {I bought mine from Hobby Lobby for a few dollars}
– cute scrapbook paper
– hot glue gun & hot glue sticks {plus or minus some aloe vera for all of those burns I give myself!}
– pen
– scissors

– the decor that you use to finish the hat with is totally up to you and your creativity! {I bought these white cotton balls from hobby lobby.. they have lots of other things you could use too like feathers, glitter balls, etc.}

Step 1: Unfasten the cardboard hat that you bought and trace the shape on to the back side of the scrapbook paper

Step 2: Cut out the pattern **NOTE: leave about a quarter of an inch border around the border that you traced from the hat. It will allow you to glue the paper over the side of the cardboard to give you nice smooth and clean edges**  {Scroll down to the bottom pictures and it will make more sense}

Step 3: Begin gluing the bottom edge of the hat onto the paper.  Make sure the edges of your tracing on the paper fit nicely with the hat edges

Step 4: After gluing the bottom edge of the hat onto the paper, cut trianges every half inch to an inch to allow the paper to be folded over and glued to the hat

Step 5: Fold over the paper and hot glue it to the hat

Step 6: Next, glue down the left side and top hole of the hat.  **It is important to not glue down the right side because you will have to fasten the two sides together and it is much easier to connect them before the right side flap is glued down. {you may have to play around with this step, I found the most difficult part of this project was figuring out how to get the two sides fastened back together}

Step 7: Once the two sides are fastened together and it looks like a hat again, you can fold over the right side paper flap {for neatness} and then glue the two sides together to make it more secure.

Step 8: Decorate!  Add whatever embelleshments you like: pearls, rhinestones, burlap, feathers, paper doilles, etc!

Life after baseball: A Time of Transition

The transition. Every ball player has to make it at some point in their life.  There will come the day in their baseball career when: no one is coming to recruit you for college, the final round of the draft has passed and your name has not been called, that one injury that just won’t heal so you can return to the field, the coach calls you into his office and says “we have to let you go”, or when you decide that your last baseball game has been played and it is time for you to become a “normal” citizen and return home to your family.  On “that day” I am sure it seems like the player’s career ended just as soon as it began and there are a flood of emotions: relief, happiness, anger, sadness, frustration and the excitement of potential opportunities.

“That day” happened for us about a month ago.  Raynor went to Arizona in January to rehab a wrist injury and had been working very hard to get ready for the season.  Once Spring Training began, he was doing very well in group 2 (the double A team).  His last game of spring training, he almost hit for the cycle with a home run, double and single and made a few really good plays in the field.  We weren’t sure where he was going to go for the season until “that day”.  I remember getting a call from him Saturday at 10am and I asked him what he was up to and he said “I’m in my hotel room”.   As soon as I heard him say that I knew something was not right because once the guys leave for the field at 7:00am, they stay there until their game is finished around 4:00.  And then he told me that he had a flight home the next day and that his baseball career was over.  I was shocked.  Everyone that we told was shocked as well.  In fact, since April 1st was the next day, they had a hard time believing it thinking it was a bad april fool’s joke.  They had basically told him that since he will be 25 in the summer and he wasn’t as experienced in the minor leagues as some of the older guys that they had to let him go.  It is a little shocking that 25 is considered old right?! Not in baseball.  Especially when compared to some of the guys who signed right out of high school and have been playing in the minors since they were 18 years old.  Everything seemed completely unfair.  Raynor has always been an extremely dedicated and very talented player.  Because of this, all of his teammates and coaches respected him very much.  It was so tempting to get angry at the people in charge of this decision, especially when Raynor did not deserve to be treated this way.  However, we ultimately knew that God had a bigger and better plan for us and even though this seemed like a turn for the worst, it actually could be a blessing in disguise.

Our whole world had completely changed. Life as we knew it would no longer be the same. The hectic schedules, the games, the traveling, the unpredicability, the excitement, the stress, the injuries and everything else that went along with it, completely gone. It took us a long time to cope with the fact that we would no longer be traveling around the country to pursue Raynor’s dream.  You would think that I would be extremely relieved.  Now that my husband is home I have someone to help take care of Kylar and everything else while I finish PA school.  But I was very upset and sad for Raynor.  The thing that Raynor dreamt of doing ever since he was a child was suddenly taken away from him. What added insult to injury was that Raynor did not deserve to lose his chance at baseball.  He had worked harder and outperformed some of the others whose chance at baseball was not taken away.  Despite all of the different ways to analyze the situation, we took comfort in the fact that we could rely on such a great God who would provide for us and console us in this very difficult time.

The only thing we could do (and still do) was trust that God would take care of us and provide Raynor with job opportunities when he got back home.  After Raynor got home, it was so great to know that I would never have to count down the days until I saw him again.  Nor would I have to give him updates everyday on the new things Kylar had learned to do.  He was home and although we were transitioning, life was so good.  The moment Kylar saw her daddy, she was all smiles!  There is no one in the world that she loves more than her daddy!  Our little family was reunited again and it took away the sting from everything that had happened in the past few days.

Once people in the area found out Raynor was back home, numerous job opportunities popped up everywhere.  It was amazing to see how the Lord provides abundantly for those who remain faithful to His word. At one point, Raynor had so many jobs lined up that he had to turn away offers to work!  We are so thankful that God has blessed us by putting people in our lives that were able to help us through this time of transition.  Our journey is far from over and we know there will be many bumps and hiccups along the way but we rejoice in them all and will praise Him through any storm we may encounter because the reward in Heaven is so much greater than any earthly desire!

Thanks for reading our story!

Here are a few key Bible verses that got me through this tough time:

“Instead of your shame, you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance.  And so you will inherit a double portion in your land,  and everlasting joy will be yours.” (Isaiah 61:7 NIV)

“Come to the water you who thirst and you will thirst no more.” (Isaiah 55:1)

My Best Friend’s Vintage Burlap Inspired Wedding Shower!

//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js My best friend is getting married in a few months and I was so excited to be able to throw her and her fiance, Kevin, a wedding shower!  It was a perfect time for celebration because Kevin recently returned from serving in Kuwait.  I had so much fun planning this shower and putting together all of the decorations!  I wanted this shower to be very special for my best friend to show her how much I appreciate her and her friendship.  I will make another post about the games we played but for today I will just share some of the photos of the decor and the links to the “how-to” blog posts I used to create some of these decorations.

I made the burlap frame on the right using cardboard, burlap and wooden letter tiles I found at Hobby Lobby for $2.00! This adorable little frame only cost me about $1.50 + several hot glue gun burns! 🙂 Here is the link for the tutorial to make the burlap frame!

I found the wooden suitcase at Hobby Lobby 50% off for $15!

Looking for mason jars or a mason jar look alike?! Look no further! This mason jar look alike is actually a Ragu jar that I saved! {My husband gives me a hard time now because I have gotten into the habit of saving everything! But, I am sure he was very happy that I was able to save some $$ by reusing this jar instead of spending money on a mason jar! 🙂 }.  The old books I found at a yard sale for $1 a piece!
Just another little tip: if you are looking for cheap old vintage junk {nice description huh?! 🙂 } try looking at estate sales. I have found several cute items for decorating that has saved me lots of money!
These old bottles I found at a yard sale for $1 each!
For the shower favors, I bought packest of wildflower seed for $1 each.
I had a lot of fun making this Kitchen Towel cake. I think it turned out super cute!  I used various kitchen necessities that she will need for cooking.  Here is the link to the kitchen towel cake tutorial.
I made this sign by doubling up the burlap and painting on the letters and hearts with brown paint.  So easy and so cute!
Now, pictures of the happy couple!!
I love them!

How to: Home made baby safe finger paint!

//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js

What baby doesn’t love to put everything in their mouth?! That is why when it comes time to have some painting fun with baby, it is important to make sure everything is baby safe! This past week, Kylar had lots of fun working on her first “masterpiece”! I think she particularly enjoyed making a mess and watching mommy clean it up 😉 Here is the recipe and directions for the baby safe finger paint we made!

First, you will need:

2 1/2 cups of water
1/4 cup cornstarch
Food coloring

1. Mix the cornstarch and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil.

2. Stir occasionally. Once it has turned to a clear and thick consistency, you will know it is ready.  I used some of the Gerber baby food containers that I had saved and they were perfect for finger paint storage! (I knew all of my hoarding would come in handy some day!)

3. Add food coloring and you’re done! So easy!

See! Totally edible!
All bundled up after making a mess.. I mean masterpeice!
Perfect! Ithink we have a little Picasso on our hands!
And here is another cute pic of my little one that is totally unrelated to DIY baby finger paints but mommies love to brag! 🙂

Organized Insanity: The life of a baseball wife

Oh wow, what a whirlwind our lives have been over the past few months! Where should I begin? I guess I will start with the marathon of events over the past 6+ weeks.  But first, I will show you a pic of Kylar and Raynor at Spring Training! So cute!

In February, Kylar and I returned home from my parents house (I was in Dallas for my OBGYN rotation) and I embarked upon the first few months of being an “unofficial” single mom.  It was not easy taking care of Kylar by myself while I began one of the most difficult rotations of PA school (Raynor is in AZ for rehab + spring training.. thus my “unofficial single mom” status). A week later, Kylar had an ear infection and I had the flu (stupid flu shot didn’t help me at all!!).  Then Kylar and I were able to fly out to Arizona to see Raynor during Spring Training! It was a much needed break from all the chaos at home (btw, my house looks like a tornado swept through it at any given day.. I am accepting applications for free cleaning services from any of my lovely friends who are willing to attempt to salvage my house!).  When we got back, my computer decided to crash the week before grand rounds.  Coincidentally, I had just finished my Master’s Thesis outline the night before and I had NOT saved it to my flash drive yet.  >Enter: the crazy/panicked PA student here<  Believe me, no amount of Valium or Xanax could have calmed me down that particular moment!  However, I attempted to reboot my computer one more time and it must have been my lucky day because my computer sputtered back to life! I was able to save all of my pertinent documents to my flash drive before it crashed again for the last time (I think that was more of God’s grace than luck!).  Even though I was able to save my documents, I was without my computer which made it very difficult to study for my test, but I managed (what did they do in the olden days before there were computers?!) The next week, Raynor was sick all week in Arizona without me there to take care of him :(, and I had to take one of the most difficult tests of PA school.  When I returned from grand rounds, Kylar was starting to wheeze a lot (she had been very congested for a few weeks).  I hate seeing her sick 😦 But she did perk up a bit when she got to go with mommy and a friend to get a pedicure! She loved it! (and the pedicure ladies loved her.. I had to pry her from them when we left!).  I took her to her pediatrician this week and she is now on a long list of meds (kinda reminds me of my geriatric patients’ med rec lists!) for an ear infection, allergies and bronchitis — I think she is allergic to every type of plant in central Texas.

Oh, and I almost forgot to share Raynor’s newest acquired injury: a broken tooth.  No joke!  He text me in January (he was in AZ then rehabbing a different injury) and said “I broke my tooth.” And that was it.. such a simple text message for something that could use a lot more of an explanation! Turns out, he was fielding ground balls and decided it would be fun to catch one in the mouth.  4 hours and several shots of Novocaine later, my husband was toothless! He sent me a picture of his toothless grin and I could not believe it!  I think my words were “wow! Kylar really looks exactly like you now – you both don’t have any teeth!!”  Unbeknownst to me, the prosthesis for teeth actually take 3-6 months to make so my husband would remain toothless for a while longer than I really cared for.  In the meantime, they gave him a “flipper” (no, not the dolphin — it is an interesting looking device with a fake tooth attached to it..) When I was in AZ visiting, he loved to pop it in and out of his mouth! Drove me nuts!!!  Luckily, the dentist was able to expedite the process so Raynor was able to get his permanent tooth yesterday!

It looks exactly like his old tooth! — wait, that sounds a little strange..

So, that has been my life in a nutshell for the past few weeks.  It is crazy, hectic, chaotic, wonderful and everything in between.  I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I hope you have enjoyed my little rant.. hopefully my next post will include an update on where Raynor will be going for the season!  Until then, here are some pics of the past few weeks!

Can’t believe my sweet baby girl is 7 months old!

The worst day of the year: Saying goodbye for the season

As I watch my husband say goodbye to our baby girl, squeezing her so tight that she wiggles around uncomfortably, my heart breaks inside.  The day I dread the most out of every year has come sooner than expected for us.  Usually, this dreaded day falls on the first day of spring training; but this year, Raynor has to leave early to rehab a wrist injury until spring training begins. This past season, he injured his wrist and the trainers told him to take it easy during the off-season and maybe it would heal on its own.  Unfortunately, his wrist has not gotten better and the Giants flew him out to San Francisco a few days ago to have an MRI and see their hand and wrist surgeon.  They suspect it might be a TFCC tear which would require surgery, but the MRI can often times be elusive to injuries such as this one which means they would go in laproscopically to inspect the injury.  They gave him a cortisone shot in hopes that it will rehab well and not require surgery.  We knew that this year would without a doubt be the hardest year yet to say goodbye for the season.  When Raynor left for this season, he not only hugged and kissed his wife goodbye but he kissed his 5 month old baby girl and told her he loves her, knowing that when he comes back home, her 1st birthday will have already passed and she will be toddling around the house.  These are the things that most people dont think about when they wonder how fun and “glamorous” it would be to live the life of a baseball family.  I have had a lot of fun traveling around to different states and watching Raynor play and I would not trade our life for anything.  Although it is stressful and emotionally draining to live 1,000 miles away from my husband for 7 months out of the year, I could not be more proud of my husband for pursuing his dream and doing what the Lord has called him to do despite the many obstacles he faces.   As I remember all of the tough trials that the Lord has allowed me to persevere through, I am so thankful for them because not only have they given me strength, but my walk with the Lord has grown so much stronger.  I admit, I am not a perfect Christian.  I don’t read the Bible as much as I should, I have my days when I throw myself a pitty party, I have a bad attitude about things sometimes, I say and do things I shouldn’t, but the beauty in all of this is that our God is a loving and forgiving God and His grace is sufficient for all of our wrongdoings.  I feel so blessed that I have a God who will not leave me nor forsake me during whatever I may be going through.  This is why I still chuckle to myself every time someone asks me “How are you able to handle all of the stress and everything that has been going on?”  It amuses me because I, myself am not the one who gets me and my family through all of these difficult times, it is the Lord who renews my strength everyday and sustains me until the finish line is reached.  Therefore, even though I know that this baseball season will be the most difficult one yet, I am not nervous because I know the Lord will provide like He always has and always will.
